PEOPLE recently spoke with the professional skateboarder, 32, in celebration of the release of the video game Tony Hawk’s™ Pro Skater™ 3 + 4. Sharing an update about his family life, Riley says he and wife Frances Bean Cobain enjoy a “quiet” life with their son Ronin, 10 months.
Of the legacy each of their families carries, Riley tells PEOPLE, “We just do our own thing. We don’t really think too much about it, honestly, other than the fact that we do stuff like this with a video game, or whatever it may be, or something regarding her side of the family. But other than that, we’re just a very quiet stay-at-home family. We just hang out.”
The proud dad shares that his little boy is “learning every day” as they have fun, “growing as a family.”

“My dad helps a lot and it’s really cool that we get to all hang out together. It’s just a cool thing for him to get to hang out with his grandson a lot. That’s kind of where we’re at, just taking it day by day.”
Coming into his own as a dad, Riley says it’s “really cool” to understand his dad’s decisions from a different perspective.
“I’m just super grateful that my dad gave me the freedom to do certain things that I wanted to, like skateboarding or whatever it may be. And that’s all I can hope to do for my son, is just give him the opportunity if something interests them or they fall in love with a certain sport or hobby,” he shares.
“I feel like, as a parent, all you can hope to do.”

Riley joins his dad’s pro-skateboarding video game universe in an official capacity with the newly-remade version of the beloved games from the early 2000s. Having played the originals growing up, it’s just as exciting and nostalgic for him as many of the game’s biggest fans.
“I feel like I have so many friends that grew up playing them that it takes you back to a certain time in your life. It’s very nostalgic, and so I think anything getting redone that brings back that feeling, people get super stoked on,” he shares.
“I know myself, it just brings me back to being a kid playing those games, so it’s pretty cool to be able to relive that a little bit. I feel like it’s done in a way that feels right, where it still has that nostalgic feel, but with more modern stuff like new characters and different things in the game that weren’t there before, that maybe have changed in skateboarding over the last 20-something years.”
